I was born, grew-up, and spent my early adulthood in New York, which probably continues to shape my worldview. My first career was as a cook working in small upscale restaurants. In my early thirties, I moved to the San Francisco Bay Area where I changed careers, obtaining a master’s degree in counseling psychology at California State University, Hayward in 1994. I became a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in California in 2001. In 2019, my wife and I moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico. I am currently licensed in both states (CA LMFC 38084) and (NM CMF018121).
In the years since getting licensed I have trained in a variety of experiential, somatic, and trauma-informed approaches, including Ericksonian Hypnotherapy, Focusing, NARM (Neuro-Affective Relational Model), Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, and Somatic Experiencing.
I obtained a Ph.D. in Transpersonal Psychology at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology (ITP, now Sofia University) in 2011. My doctoral research was on the presence of the therapist as a central factor in effective psychotherapy.
I have taught at the graduate level and was core faculty in the counseling program at the ITP from 2011 – 2014. In addition, I have an extensive background training students in counseling skills and providing clinical consultation and supervision.
I have a strong, longtime commitment to spiritual practice. I have also studied internal martial arts and have a fifth-degree black belt in Aikido. I find that these, along with my early work in restaurants, also shape my work as a therapist.
